A young boy who was injured in a snowmobile accident on Kawagama Lake on Family Day weekend remains in Sick Kids’ Hospital in Toronto.
An online fundraising page has been set up for the family of Parker Willand, 2, and at press time had raised more than $12,000.
“Parker, 2, and Jacob, 4, were in an unfortunate snowmobile accident this past Family Day,” reads the
page, created by family friend Rebecca Simm. “While Jacob was shaken up, Parker was not so fortunate and sustained major head trauma and is currently in the pediatric critical care unit at Sick Kids. Parker was transferred to Sick Kids and required surgery to relieve the pressure in his brain. He is still in the early stages and they are taking it one day at a time.
“Everything is starting to settle in for this family with the understanding that the recovery will take quite some time. They live in a remote community three hours north of Sick Kids Hospital, which leaves some challenges for them. Not being able to be at work, and commuting between home and hospital as well as caring for another young son throughout all of this will become an incredibly difficult road to navigate.
“They have tremendous family support, and friends to try to help them through the little things. However, the cost associated with their newfound circumstances will undoubtedly take an extreme toll on this young family. Please find it in your hearts to help them through this challenging time.”
Parents Joe and Amanda thanked donors for their generosity and provided an update on Parker’s condition via the fundraising page, on Feb. 26.
“We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you,” they wrote. “The outpouring of support we are receiving is overwhelming and we are finding it hard to express to everyone just how much all of your generosity, thoughts, prayers and kindness mean to us.”
“Up until yesterday the amazing pediatric team at Sick Kids have been keeping our little Parker cool, calm and comfortable to be able to allow him the best opportunity to heal his brain. In the past day they have slowly been removing the systems that have been supporting him and reducing his medications. We have had a couple of moments here he has opened his eye and looked at us, which has just made our hearts melt. But with that too we also see his road to a full recovery will be a lengthy one ... baby steps.”
