Anybody but Harper
To the Editor,
In 1997, Stephen Harper, while he was the head of the National Citizen's Coalition, spoke to a convention of his organization’s American equivalent. Two of the things he said during that speech in which he expressed disdain for Canadian values and admiration of American ultra conservative values are:
"Canada is a Northern European welfare state in the worst sense of the term, and very proud of it."
“your country, and particularly your conservative movement, is a light and an inspiration to people in this country and across the world."
In 2005, in an interview with Peter Mansbridge:“My difficulty with the prime minister (Paul Martin) at this point, Peter, is that I don’t think he’s been forthcoming and honest on fairly simple questions when there appear to be contradictions," he said. "My instinct is when someone doesn’t answer questions, even simple and fairly innocuous questions in a straightforward manner, there may be something else.”?
"We have a chance to right some of the wrongs and some of the questionable practices we have fallen into, in particular the practice in recent years of presenting omnibus legislation with respect to budgetary matters.".... “This 20 page omnibus budget bill is an affront to democracy.” How much of an affront is the Harper government’s 800 page omnibus bill that contains many things not related to budget.
“Ï will not appoint unelected people to the senate.” “I will usher in a new era of accountability.”
The man is a chameleon. No... that would be giving chameleons a bad name.
For this man to appear in public with Canada on his chest, flanked by our flag, proclaiming over and over that “Canada is the best country in the world” is hypocrisy of the highest order.
I have come to regard Stephen Harper as a fraud. During this election campaign he has been travelling in a bubble having contact only with the party faithful at carefully scripted events
So much of what his government has done has diminished Canada...internally and externally. It appears deliberate and it is heartless. The independent web based news site the Tyee has produced a list of 70 documented abuses of power committed by the current government. see http://thetyee.ca/Opinion/
It is clear that this government does not care about the rule of law….at all. Mr Harper’s government clearly thinks of the law solely as a weapon for them to wield, not something that applies to them. They have repeatedly used their majority to pass unconstitutional laws, to attack supreme court justices, to muzzle watchdogs and destroy oversight, to destroy scientific evidence, to operate in secret, to cheat in every election, to rewrite rules to suit them, to retroactively change the law when someone gets caught doing their illegal dirty work to protect them from prosecution, and to misinform constantly. The hypocrisy is incredible, and their contempt for Canadian democracy and values is staggering.
How does the government attempt win this election? The answer:distract with terrorism, muslim refugees, the niqab and barbaric cultural practices.
We only have a balanced budget because Mr Harper and Mr Oliver say we do. The parliamentary budget officer says there will be a deficit of at least a billion dollars. There is no mention of the fact that the deficit has grown every year and the federal deficit is now closing in on $613 billion and growing at a rate of 2.7 million a day. Plus, there always seems to be money for a war.
We know that, in their quest to produce a “balanced” budget federal ministers did not to spend billions of dollars that Parliament had allocated to their departments. We know that departments were ordered to freeze or cut spending. In the main, as former parliamentary budget officer Kevin Page complained, we don’t know where the cutbacks were made.
Occasionally, the cuts have become too obvious to ignore. That’s what happened when the tainted meat scandal of Alberta's XL foods made headlines. Ottawa eventually agreed to hire more meat inspectors.
Additionally, we know that the government’s share of GM was sold, the Wheat Board was sold, government properties around the world were sold, funds were taken out of EI, and more. It has been said that Harper led government has been cannibalizing government rather than streamlining it.
The total extent is unknown but to prevent further damage I urge you to vote, and to vote ABC (Any Party But Conservative).
