FROM THE FAR END of my cabin, over the crackle and snap of the wood fire, I think I hear the faintest of yelps coming through the cabin door. Home at last, I think. After four hours on the lam, The Brown Dog Jiggs must be home from the hills, just outside my cabin door, begging to be let in.

Haliburton County councillors discussed the 2012 budget at their meeting Jan. 25. The county must raise approximately $12 million of its approximately $18.5 million budget through taxation and it looks like councillors are aiming for a tax levy increase in the neighbourhood of two per cent.

A by-election will be held in Jack Layton’s former riding on March 12, the prime minister’s office announced Sunday. The riding of Toronto-Danforth, which Layton claimed in 1997, has not been represented in the House of Commons since the former NDP leader died from cancer in August.
