New address for Algonquin Highlands

Algonquin Highlands township will be getting its own postal code as part of a revamping of postal services in Haliburton County that will be taking place during the next six to eight months.
Representatives of Canada Post met with county councillors on Jan. 27 to discuss the changes.
Until now, Algonquin Highlands mailing addresses, depending on what side of Hwy. 35 they were located on, have been considered part of rural routes of either Minden or Haliburton.
Reeve Eleanor Harrison told Canada Post reps last week that she appreciates the opportunity for Algonquin Highlands to be recognized as a distinct area and thought the change would increase community pride within the township.
The main reason for the revamping is to synchronize county residents' mailing addresses with their 911 addresses. This will mean mailing address changes for some residents and Canada Post rep Diana Adamowicz said the Crown corporation will be working closely with the county throughout the process, adding that Canada Post is much more diplomatic in its operations than it used to be.
"The old Canada Post came in and made the changes and out we went," Adamowicz said, emphasizing it was important to work with local politicians. "You're going to have constituents that are going to be calling you."
The county's rural mail drop-off routes themselves would also be changing, Adamowicz said, to make it easier for carriers to complete their routes in an eight-hour workday and said this change would require more carriers for the area.
"I have excellent news for everyone in this room," she said. "We're going to be hiring."
Adamowicz said she realized the changes could mean difficulties for some county businesses who may have to change their mailing addresses, but said Canada Post would be offering those businesses free advertising opportunities as a means of compensation.
The transition will be taking place in phases during the next six to eight months, Adamowicz said.
